The Tarot Cards: 8 Interesting Facts About Tarot Cards

Ian Paton asked:

To many people reading Tarot cards is simply harmless fun.

It seems to fit in with the New Age Movement where people try to get in touch with their ‘Inner Spirit’. They believe a Tarot card reading can be used by them to channel their thoughts and connect somehow with the ‘Oneness of the Universe’.

To others it can become a practice or activity to which they are completely devoted, and eventually it becomes part of their way of life.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT TAROT CARDS

The Tarot is the most practised art of divination in the world. The cards are sometimes called ‘The Book of Divination of the Gypsies’. They have been used for hundreds of years to reveal hidden truths and to foresee the future of the person receiving the card reading. Some psychologists even use Tarot cards to identify how a client views himself by asking the patient to select a card that he or she identifies with. The origins of Tarot are steeped in mystery and it is impossible to be certain where they first came from. Some people claim that they may have come from as far back as the 11th century. However the most commonly held belief suggests Tarot originated in 15th century Italy by adding to a normal set of cards 21 trump cards, a fool and 4 queens of each suit. This eventually evolved into the traditional 78 card deck used today. The traditionally deck of 78 cards has various symbolic pictures on them. A standard pack is made up of 22 cards called the Major Arcana and four suits of 14 cards similar to playing cards. These are called the Minor Arcana. The word Arcana simply means ‘mysteries’ or ’secrets’. The Major Arcana consists of:-

THE FOOL

THE MAGICIAN

THE HIGH PRISTESS

THE EMPRESS

THE EMPEROR

THE HIEROPHANT

THE LOVERS

THE CHARIOT

STRENGTH

THE HERMIT

WHEEL OF FORTUNE

JUSTICE

THE HANGED MAN

DEATH

THE TOWER

THE STAR

THE MOON

THE SUN

JUDGEMENT

THE WORLD

There are thousands of different decks available catering to many diverse interests from baseball to voodoo. An influential deck in English speaking countries is the Rider-Waite deck. However many people will buy a set of cards with an art work and style which is compatible with their own tastes. Different readers interpret the cards in different ways, each adding their own perspective. A client will consult a Tarot reader over a particular situation in their lives. Readers of Tarot will lay the cards out in special combinations called spreads. A traditional ten card spread is called the Celtic Cross. In these spreads it is claimed that the reader can see a detailed, pictorial representation of the client’s situation. The reader can see what has caused the situation and how it is most likely to affect their future. No one knows how Tarot works. One expert believes that when the cards are shuffled the reader gets a kind of ‘psychic photograph’ of the client’s situation. The reader can suggest various pathways which a client may take to deal with the situation. If the client is aware of these potential pathways they can then select the one most appropriate to their circumstances. If the theory is correct the future is not set in stone and people are masters of our own destiny. Because of the association of Tarot cards with fortune telling, some religious groups oppose the use of Tarot cards. In some societies divination is forbidden based on religious or traditional teachings. As with many similar debates regarding lifestyles or religious practices, plenty of people can be found on both sides of the debate, supporting or condemning the use of Tarot cards.

Why Do People Use Fortunetellers and Psychics?

By admin On March 30, 2008 No Comments
psychic
1. Why do people tend to go to fortunetellers?

People seek fortunetellers for many reasons. They want a quick fix to a problem they are having. They are hurting. They are vulnerable. They tend to be naïve and easily duped. They may be emotionally or psychologically incapable to see the root issues or deal with them. Or, they may be mentally lazy or depressed. They may simply be searching and a fortuneteller or psychic is an easy way to find answers. People don’t want to solve a problem at the root cause since this requires serious self-confrontation and takes time. People sometimes have a need to search for “other worldly” reasons for problems, something outside of their control or their understanding. They may feel that if the problem is other worldly, or so big or “out there” it removes personal responsibility as well as gives them more status for having such “superior” problems. There is the element of the mysterious or the unknown that is given more credit than one’s own logic and reasoning and ability to understand. This indicates a serious lack of self worth. On a more sinister aspect, people go to fortunetellers to find ways to gain advantage over others, to succeed over others, to coerce others and to control others. There are many reasons.

2. What are the main questions that they tend to ask?

People want to know about their future: health, sex, marriage, money, jobs, and what happened to a dead relative, as well as a way out of some guilt or painful experience. Questions may seem mundane and silly, but at their core there may be some serious issues to be dealt with.

3. What do you think of the people who use this information as a source of facts?

They are either being deceived or deceiving themselves. The fortunetellers are not telling facts at all. They are either guessing or are full of lies and deceptions. On one end of the spectrum, the fortuneteller may really feel they are seeing and feeling things but have no clue what these things are. On the other end, there is deliberate deception. On some level, the person seeking fortunetellers and psychics is really looking for some answers whether or not they admit it. The answers are then taken seriously or considered, whether they are valid or not. We basically give our power away to someone else and take his or her statements as facts and run our life accordingly. Some fortunetellers are “honest” enough to admit this; some truly believe they have the “gift.” Any person with true spiritual and psychic abilities will keep the mouth shut and not tell fortunes or do psychic readings. People are desperate so they go to fortunetellers. I don’t blame them for seeking help. The fortune telling/psychic industry has grown big at the expense of others. But, these practices are as old as the hills and they will continue to exist as long as there is someone to be taken advantage of.

Instead of deceiving people, a spiritually gifted person encourages others to seek help inside themselves, or sends them to a qualified therapist, a doctor, a marriage or business counselor. A true psychic leads a searching person to books and spiritual practices that will help gain self-knowledge and self-confidence. The real psychic is a healer and a guide to help the person to become independent and not be stuck and co-dependent on others. A true psychic will not tell the person the answers but leads a person on a path of self-discovery.

The Lord Buddha said not to believe anything because He said so, but to verify it with our own intelligence and experiences.

4. Is it worth putting so much faith on fortunetellers?

Not at all, unless you want to be deceived and give your money away and be taken advantage of. Great religions and spiritual disciplines always discourage people from believing these kinds of people and for good reason. You can go to a million fortunetellers and they will all tell you the same thing. I call this “psychic mumbo jumbo.” If you need help, go to a professional and qualified person who is trained to deal with the real problem. Or, if you can, learn to deal with the problem from a physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual sense and see the real causes. Read great religious books and great literature. Learn to pray and meditate. Build your ability to reason and think. These provide real guidance. Instead of covering up the problem, try to solve it or come to a deeper understanding of your life and issues. If we continuously rely on others to tell our future, we do not build our inner sensitivity that will guide us on the right path. If we trust ourselves and listen to our inner voice and stop running to others for everything, we will know what the answers are.

5. Can they really make our lives better?

No, since most people have a tendency to believe them and get sidetracked. They complicate our lives and increase the thickness of our inner walls of self-deception. Human beings are very complicated. Sometimes people ask about some simple matter, but at the base of it, there are many other complex issues that need to be considered.

Fortunetellers/psychics see only one small layer of a person’s vibrations that is called the etheric or emotional levels, just like what animals can sense about a person. If he or she is capable of greater knowledge, they are not telling fortunes or doing readings; they know the need to keep their mouth shut and not involve themselves in the karma of others. A fortuneteller/psychic is by definition a person with limited intelligence and self-discipline, is unable to control images and visions coming from subtle levels of life, and is unable to know what the images really mean.

Even if we seek such things as mere entertainment, we need to ask ourselves, do we believe any part of it? Are we hoping deep inside of us that some of what the person said can come true? In some subtle way, we are putting power in someone else. At a very vulnerable time in a person’s life, fortunetellers can wield tremendous power and influence. We complicate matters further when we know we are deceiving ourselves and begin to lose faith in ourselves.

It is far better to seek help from qualified professionals and do the hard work.

Psychism is a serious issue and should not be toyed with and mixed up with common parlor tricks known as fortunetelling and reading people’s lives.

Thanks for the questions. Your comments are appreciated.

Developing Psychic Powers Through Concentration

By admin On March 29, 2008 No Comments
psychic
Welcome to the world of psychic power. Your journey will be an enlightening one. Almost everyone possesses the ability to develop psychic powers. The key to unleashing that ability is learning to concentrate. Find a quiet place where you will not be distracted. Get comfortable; take some deep breaths to help clear your mind of clutter. You are about to embark on an amazing journey.

You must first believe in yourself and the psychic world. You must allow your mind to absorb the energy around you then you must understand what that energy is saying to you. Everybody emits an energy field which consists of their thoughts and moods. When you learn to read that energy field you will have the power to interact with that person on a spiritual level.

Do you ever get the feeling that you have experienced an event before but you can’t quite remember when? Have you ever heard a loved one call your name then you later learn that your loved one was in trouble at that time? Many people are confused when these events take place, not understanding the importance of what is happening to them.

When you develop your psychic powers you will learn that you have an energy that transcends time and space. You can use that energy to enrich your life and the lives of those around you. You will be able to know when someone is in trouble and in need of help. You will also know when someone is feeling joy and you can experience that joy with them.

To begin, close your eyes and rid your mind of all the clutter you have accumulated. Picture a peaceful scene in your mind. It might be a garden scene or it might be the ocean waves crashing on the sand. Now take yourself there. Picture yourself actually walking through that garden or along that beach. This might take a little while but with practice you will be able to go to your place immediately.

Once you get to your peaceful place it is time to proceed further. Think about your best friend. What is your friend doing right now? Is your friend at peace or is something bothering them? Try taking your concentration to a deeper level and see if you can get inside your friend’s mind. Make a mental note to call your friend later and let them know what you found.

When you learn how to develop psychic powers you will eventually be able to see what is going on within a stranger’s mind. Your friend was easier because you knew something about them but when you continue to strengthen your psychic energy you will possess the ability to read the energy which surrounds anyone you meet.

This is basic information for the beginning student. Developing psychic powers takes time and a lot of practice. Much like playing the piano, practice will improve your ability. Once you learn how to develop psychic powers you will find that you have an endless opportunity.

Tarot Cards- a Clever Marketing Strategy or an Ancient Mystical Guide?

Tarot cards- a clever marketing strategy or an ancient mystical guide?

There is much mystery surrounding the history of the tarot and countless myths about its origins. Cynics say that this mystery has been manipulated as a marketing tool for tarot card salesmen!

However, by just looking at the evidence and opinions supplied by other tarot enthusiasts we see that the earliest surviving full deck was painted in 1422 by Italian artist Bonifacio Bembo. This is known as the Visconti deck, named after the Duke of Milan, who commissioned them. Although accounts of Ancient Egyptian, Celtic, Indian and earlier Italian links have been suggested, there is no evidence of any earlier decks.

The cards were originally used for a game called Tarocchi or ‘Game of Triumphs’ which was similar to Bridge. The game was played mainly by the Upper Classes and has continued in some circles.

The tarot’s use by the Upper Classes probably saved the game from being banned by the Church even though it was considered to be heresy and was outlawed by the Church. Indeed in the latter half of the fifteenth century some church sermons labelled tarot as the work of the Devil, but the Church had better foes to fight where cards were concerned- mainly games promoting gambling.

It is believed that the cards were used for inspiration for poetry, describing aspects of the human mind and character traits. The cards have obviously evolved according to the culture of the times and attitudes from whence they were used.

Probably the most important manifestations and manipulations of the Tarot deck were by Alistair Crowley and Waite of the Rider-Waite deck. The imagery on this deck is the one with which we are most familiar today. The Rider- Waite deck was introduced into America in the twentieth century and the one most available to the American public.

Tarot Cards as Alternative Therapy

By admin On March 24, 2008 No Comments

Neoli Marcos asked:

Whether we admit or not, most of us have quaint notions of what tarot cards are.

On the surface, they are merely a deck of illustrated cards used in predictions, while the tarot card reader is an eccentric person dressed in robes seated behind the fortune-telling booth in the town fair. This image of tarot cards is, of course, clichéd, and yet we’d rather feel comfortable with its familiarity than dig deeper. We resort to the more convenient explanation rather than actually investigate the sometimes unpleasant yet gratifying truth of tarot cards.

Perhaps, the most famous among the tarot cards is the Death Card, a card quite unfairly invested with too much negative meanings and energies behind it, so much so that we usually think of tarot cards as tools of the occult, vehicles of evil even. While we can’t deny the fact that indeed tarot can be used for such purposes, tarot cards can also be perfectly well-intentioned and can be actually used for good causes.

As a matter of fact, the earliest use of tarot cards in fifteenth century Italy was as a game, much like a deck of regular playing cards but with the addition of trump cards. It wasn’t until late 17th or 18th century that tarot cards began to take on a more serious role in divination.

Over the years, the pictures in the tarot cards, their rich symbolisms, procedures, purposes, and meanings evolved in such a way that the characters portrayed in them have come to mirror all our follies, fears, strengths, and hopes. By stringing them together into a tale, we are able to retell and uncover the past as we would have liked it unfold, as well as get a sense of a manageable future we can feel safe with.

A radical and inevitable shift indeed for tarot cards from a simple game to life-changing therapy.

Carl Jung, a world renowned psychologist has always considered tarot as an alternative psychotherapy. By utilising the rich imagery encapsulated in every tarot card, we are able to voice out our concerns, look into our past, and prepare for the future. In some cases, children who don’t yet know how to speak can use the images and characters in the tarot deck to piece together their thoughts and tell their story. Tarot cards then offer an alternative language system through which we can bring our Unconscious up to the light.

Jung explains that tarot cards represent different archetypes of human personality and situations. The Death Card then is not just simplistically a dreary card foretelling iretractable death to the querent (person who asks questions in a tarot card reading). Rather, the death card can be seen as the death, an end of something inside us: a vice, long standing pain, bad habits, sorrow, signaling rebirth.

We do not just blindly pick out cards from the tarot deck. Every moment of our lives we are armed with choices, choices that spell out and define our fate. It’s not just what you keep out from your life that matters; it’s also what you allow to make a difference. Even if they’re just a deck of tarot cards.

Does Reading Tarot Cards Cause People To Get Into The Occult?

By admin On March 23, 2008 No Comments
tarot
Koz Huseyin asked:

The use of tarot cards has been going on for hundreds of years. Tarot cards fringe on a subject called the new age, and mysticism. This brings up an important topic, as we have seen that in drug use, there is a case for such a view, but does it apply to tarot?

This kind of fusion with the new age and mysticism is close to occultism. Many people who generally go into the many branches of the occult often have started with a keen interest in astrology, and or then into tarot cards and reading the cards.

Does this necessary mean that most people who get into tarot will go into the occult sciences? I don’t believe it does. However, it is a point to consider. And it depends on the person rather than simply stating that tarot cards get people into occultism.

For example many people meditate, but not all of those people will practice yoga or even get into deep occult topics. Again, it depends on what the person is seeking. If a person doesn’t find the answers they seek with the popular religions or seek to find out more than simply believing what has been written, that person likely will delve into the occult.

Many people who get into divination of some kind, whether it is astrology or tarot card reading, will not pursue it for life. Many choose to dabble, to find some answers, and that is how it finishes for most.

It is the few who will continue to read tarot cards for a lifetime. However, it happens. And even then it is not something that will cause all those people to get into the occult sciences, Wicca, etc.

The world has many branches, and many religions, and though occultism can not really be defined as a religion, in the Judeo-Christian religion sense, it is still a path that many people choose to follow. Occultism and mysticism seem to provide people who are seeking a more depth, to find the answers they seek.

A point to remember is that occultism and a cult are totally different things. A cult generally has a bad objective, whereas occultism has a positive objective. History has made us weary and rightly so, because it is not like a religion such as Christianity which is in the norm, above the table, and everyone knows what is going on.

Wicca for example has many branches which make up Wicca, and defining a doctrine for how things operate is not something that happens in Wicca or any other occult paths.

I guess we have sidestepped a bit from the tarot cards, and occultism question, but it is hard to define a simple yes or no. Looking at research, and how people generally act with topics of divination, it is not a cause for concern that people will jump into the new age, and stay.

However for many people tarot cards have been an entry point. For others, it has allowed them to dabble, and then leave. I guess it depends on what people want out of tarot, and the questions and answers they seek to be resolved.

A Few Facts on Tarot Psychic Reading

By admin On March 20, 2008 No Comments
psychic
Tarot cards have been used for centuries to foretell how a persons life will turn out or how a certain event will come to pass in the future. Now more than ever, the tarot is being used as a divination tool for psychic readings.

Here are a few facts on the meaning of some of the tarot cards.

- The 2 of Cups: The Tarot can sense when love is near. The 3 of cups means a wedding or happy celebration is at hand. The Ace of cups when it appears with other relationship cards may mean the beginning of a new romantic relationship, or the renewal of an old relationship is on the horizon. The 9 of cups, 4 of wands, and even The Sun in the right place in a spread, point to love. The biggest signal that love is close is the 2 of cups.

- The Lovers Card: This card may indicate a relationship, but all is not rosy. The Lovers card indicates that a decision regarding a relationship needs to be made.

- The Death Card: This card does not indicate that you will die soon, but rather that an old way of life is passing away to make room for a new chapter, a change in the way you look at things, a change in living arrangements, or a relationship of some kind is coming to an end. This is a good thing and you must give up the old so that the new can manifest in your life. Death is always the harbinger of new life.

- The Tower: Indicates an upheaval in your life that has already happened and is over now. You may still be suffering from the incident, but the tower tells you that it is time to begin building a new foundation to rebuild a better life, relationship or whatever you have lost.

- The Knights: Wherever a knight appears there is action, activity, and drama. Not all of the knights of the Tarot tell of the same type of event. If the knight of cups appears in your spread, for the most part, you will be swept off your feet by a romantic, sensitive man or woman. This may be the one. The knight of swords may not mean to but he will bring chaos and pain in your life. The good news is that he will not stay long, but you will be left to straighten things out. The Knight of Wands loves to rescue a damsel in distress. If you are a man and this card comes up in your reading it can mean that you have the same qualities.

This guy is honest and always sees the glass as half full. If a girl gets this card after a question about the fella she is currently with, know that he is not cheating on you. The Knight of Coins (Pentacles) Is a bit of a workaholic but does not ignore his family. He is always concerned about taking care if his duties, especially when he can help and provide for others. He is a planner and a thinker and is not hasty with a decision. A knight in your reading may also mean that you have the same trait in yourself, may be a suggestion to use that part of yourself to overcome an obstacle, or an emotional or travel- related movement that is worth considering. Knights may depict a man or a woman with certain qualities.
